Rookie / Beginner Program

Week 1 of the Term 2 Rookie program was another fine day of weather and of course filled with fun. This week the juniors got to have a quick refresher course on Pitching and Full Swing.

We started out with a brief recap of the rules for Junior Golf Programs, followed by a check up on set up to make sure all children had the correct fundamentals. A brief description of the Pitching technique was followed by some pitching to either of 2 pins.

After about 20 minutes of perfecting their pitching and a few of the children forgetting the rules and having to go for a quick run to the tree and back, the weekly team game time had arrived. This week’s “Team J” comprised Alex, Bryce and Frankie pitted against “Team A” comprising Daniel, Jake, Luke and Michael.

The first game was “Nearest the Pin” to a flag about 20 metres away. After some impressive shots Jake gave Team A the flying start after a close measure from Bryce.  The second game was another “Nearest the Pin” but this time to a flag about 30 metres away.  After Frankie played a couple of impressive pitches Team J held the advantage before Michael stepped to the plate and won the hole for Team A.

The next station was Full Swing on the range.  After a quick recap each child got to view their swing on the Hudl App. Each child was then given a couple of things to work on and some great changes were made.

With only a few minutes left in the class it was time to finish with another team game.

The third and final game was trying to get the ball into a small bunker in the middle of the range, about 50 metres away.  Each child could pick whichever club they thought would bring about success.

Jake from Team A got the ball rolling early by getting a ball into the bunker and despite some great shots from both teams, his was the only ball to go in giving Team A the bragging rights until next week and of course getting the Super Doopers.

Next week will be Chipping and Full Swing with the Driver!

Silver / Intermediate Program

Week 1 of the Term 2 Silver program was another fine day of weather and of course filled with fun. This week the juniors got to do a Pitching Refresher Course and then some work on their Full Swing.

We started out with a brief recap of the Pitching technique followed by some practice.  After about 20 minutes it was time for the first Team Game.  The first game was “Nearest the Pin” to a flag about 20 metres away.  This week’s “Team @” comprised Conor, Darby, George and Tom versus “Team X”, Daisy, Ethan and Ollie.

After a few balls ended about 6 feet from the pin, there was a measurement and despite Team X starting to celebrate early thinking they had won, reality soon kicked in and Team @ got the all important first point after Juntas’ (Tom) closest shot ended up a few centimetres inside Ethan’s shot .

The second game was to a flag about 30 metres away.  Daisy played an exquisite high pitch to finish about 1 foot from the pin to the roars of approval from the crowd and other players. Despite a few good attempts Daisy’s shot finished inside all other golf balls squaring the ledger at 1 – 1.

The next station was Full Swing on the range.  After a quick recap each child got to view their swing on the Hudl App. After some work on their swing the final game to decide this week’s winning team had arrived.

The third and final game was trying to get the ball into a small bunker in the middle of the range, about 50 metres away.  Each child could pick whichever club they thought would bring about success.

Far (George) set the standard with 2 sweetly struck Sand wedges, with one of them finishing inside the bunker.  However, it wasn’t long before the ledger would be levelled after Ollie’s second attempt was a pure hybrid that flew straight into the bunker.  Team @ then thought Ethan’s shot was going to miss to the left and decided it was time to give a little bit of light heckling, but their angle on the side was misleading and laughs quickly turned to despair when Ethan’s ball dropped into the bunker.

It all came down to Juntas and unlike previous clinics where he has chosen the correct club, he unwisely went for a chip and run with the driver and failed to get a ball in the bunker, leaving Team X the winners and getting the chocolates.

Next week will be Chipping and Full Swing with the Driver!
